Google app Now Faster for iOS Users with AMP Pages

Google has cut down the loading time and updated the app with some new features for a faster user experience for the iOS users.

These small improvements will save app users a combined 6.5 million hours this year.

A few months ago Google announced the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) for the mobile web. Google app will be using AMP for news articles from a vast array of publishers and the pages will load instantly for a better user experience. Look out for the lightning bolt and “AMP” next to articles in the “Top Stories” section of your search results and enjoy blazing-fast news.

You can instantly watch sports highlights right from your Now cards. When you get a card with sports highlights, just tap the and watch it right from the app. Score!

Google Search Console Allows You To Group Or Combine Sites Together Via Property Sets

Google adds another feather to the Search Console cap.

Google  introduces the concept of "property sets," which let you combine multiple properties (both apps and sites) into a single group to monitor the overall clicks and impressions in search within a single report.

To get started You Need To:

  1. Create a property set
  2. Add the properties you're interested in
  3. The data will start being collected within a few days

URLs of the included properties in the property set will be included as a single presence in Search Analytics feature of the Search Console and you will be able to get collected/grouped data.

This feature will work for any kind of property in Search Console. You can use it to gain an overview of:

  • International websites
  • Mixed HTTP / HTTPS sites
  • Different departments or brands that run separate websites
  • Monitor the Search Analytics of all your apps together

This will be rolled out in the next few days.

Google Announces “Rich Cards”  For Recipes And Movies For Mobile SERPs (An Upgrade On Rich Snippets)

Yesterday, Google announced a new search result format “Rich Cards”which use schema.org structured mark up, just like the Rich Snippets format.

The focus is to provide a more rewarding experience to the mobile user.

Google has started showing Rich Cards only for 2 categories,  i.e  Recipes and Movies and the Rich Cards  as of now will show only on mobile SERPs in English on Google.com .

Google has updated their developer site with more documentation and examples to help you learn this new format.

They have also revamped Structured Data Testing Tool of how the rich card might appear in Search (currently available for recipes and movies).

Plus they added a rich cards report in the Google Search Console. It has indexing rates and error reporting to help you implement them.

Currently this is t an experimental stage but Google seems to be having promising future plans in taking this ahead . Google will have a Search and the mobile content ecosystem session at Google I/O (where Rich Cards will be discussed and which will be live streamed!).

What Is Gboard By Google?

Gboard is  a new app for your iPhone that lets you search and send information, GIFs, emojis and more, right from your keyboard.

With Gboard, you can search right from your keyboard. Anything you’d search on Google, you can search with Gboard. Results appear as cards with the key information front and center, such as the phone number, ratings and hours. With one tap, you can send it to your friend and you keep the conversation going.

Google Search Console And Google Analytics Get More Deeply Integrated

Google announced yesterday that they have introduced the ability to display Search Console metrics alongside Google Analytics metrics in the same reports, side by side – which gives a full view of how your site shows up and performs in organic search results.

Google analytics and Search Console are the 2 Google properties which no search marketer can ignore. We have been able to link Search Console and Google Analytics since many years but this update will give a fuller picture of the website’s performs for organic search.

You may not see this immediately, as this update will be rolled out over in the coming weeks. There will be a new section 'Search Console' under Acquisition which will display the integrated data.

This data can be helpful for: 

  • Find landing pages that are attracting many users through Google organic search (e.g., high impressions and high click through rate) but where users are not engaging with the website. In this case, you should consider improving your landing pages.
  • Find landing pages that have high site engagement but are not successfully attracting users from Google organic search  (e.g., have low click through rate). In this case, you might benefit fromimproving titles and descriptions shown in search.
  • Learn which queries are ranking well for each organic landing page.
  • Segment organic performance by device category (desktop, tablet, mobile) in the new Devices report.

This will surely help SEOs to do quality analysis and move on from doing only the quantity analysis.  This data of acquisitions, behaviour and conversions can also help us determine and plan targeted content .

July 13th 2016 Onwards Google Will Ban Payday Loans Ads.

Google announced yesterday that starting July 13th 2016, they will be putting a ban on payday loan ads.  and ads related to some other related products.

Google says:

We will no longer allow ads for loans where repayment is due within 60 days of the date of issue. In the U.S., we are also banning ads for loans with an APR of 36% or higher. When reviewing our policies, research has shown that these loans can result in unaffordable payment and high default rates for users so we will be updating our policies globally to reflect that.

According to Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, "This new policy addresses many of the longstanding concerns shared by the entire civil rights community about predatory payday lending. These companies have long used slick advertising and aggressive marketing to trap consumers into outrageously high interest loans - often those least able to afford it."

The purpose of the ban is to protect the users from the deceptive financial products. Google clearly mentions that the ban will not affect companies offering loans such as:

  • Mortgages
  • Car Loans
  • Student Loans
  • Commercial loans
  • Revolving Lines of Credit (e.g. Credit Cards).

Beware: Google Can Take Manual Action Against Any Unwanted Sneaky Redirects For Mobile Users

Google yesterday posted on its official blog that website owners should get rid of unwanted sneaky redirects.

Google says:

Redirecting mobile users to improve their mobile experience (like redirecting mobile users from example.com/url1 to m.example.com/url1) is often beneficial to them. But redirecting mobile users sneakily to a different content is bad for user experience and is against Google’s webmaster guidelines.

Google has always been focusing and rewarding good user experience. If a URL opens normally on a desktop but an unrelated URL opens when clicking a search result using a smartphone then it is a frustrating experience for the user .

Sneaky Redirects For Mobile Users

Google's advice and tips on how to detect and handle these redirects:

  • Sometimes webmasters intentionally redirect URLS when accessed via a mobile. These kind of redirects are a violation of rules and Google can take manual action to against it if harms the user experience.
  • Sometimes website owners are not aware about it but the URLs have a sneaky redirect due to some advertising schemes and scripts which redirect the user to a completely irrelevant URL. This can happen even when the website has been hacked and scripts have been maliciously added to redirect users to other sites.

 How do I detect if my site is doing sneaky mobile redirects?

Google recommends the following:

  • Check if you are redirected when you navigate to your site on your smartphone
  • Listen to your users
  •  Monitor your users in your site’s analytics data
  • To be aware of wide changes in mobile user activity as soon as they happen, you can for example set up Google Analytics alerts.

Some Preventive Measures Recommended By Google:

  • To ensure quality search results for our users, the Google Search Quality team can take action on such sites, including removal of URLs from our index.  When we take manual action, we send a message to the site owner via Search Console. Therefore, make sure you’ve set up a Search Console account.
  • Be sure to choose advertisers who are transparent on how they handle user traffic, to avoid unknowingly redirecting your own users. If you are interested in trust-building in the online advertising space, you may check out industry-wide best practices when participating in ad networks. For example, the Trustworthy Accountability Group’s (Interactive Advertising Bureau) Inventory Quality Guidelines are a good place to start. There are many ways to monetize your content with mobile solutions that provide a high quality user experience, be sure to use them.

The Loon Project Aims To Bring the Internet within reach of 100 million Indonesians

In Indonesia today, only about 1 out of every 3 people are connected to the web, and most of their connections are painfully slow. Many people live in areas without existing Internet infrastructure; on an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, with mountains and jungles, it’s difficult to run fiber optic cable or install mobile phone towers.

Google announced starting next year, the top three mobile network operators in Indonesia will begin testing Project Loon balloon-powered Internet. This will bring the Internet within reach of 100 million Indonesians.

What Is Project Loon?

Project Loon balloons float in the stratosphere, twice as high as airplanes and the weather. In the stratosphere, there are many layers of wind, and each layer of wind varies in direction and speed. Loon balloons go where they’re needed by rising or descending into a layer of wind blowing in the desired direction of travel. By partnering with Telecommunications companies to share cellular spectrum we’ve enabled people to connect to the balloon network directly from their phones and other LTE-enabled devices. The signal is then passed across the balloon network and back down to the global Internet on Earth.

How Loon Works?

Project Loon balloons travel approximately 20 km above the Earth’s surface in the stratosphere. Winds in the stratosphere are stratified, and each layer of wind varies in speed and direction. Project Loon uses software algorithms to determine where its balloons need to go, then moves each one into a layer of wind blowing in the right direction. By moving with the wind, the balloons can be arranged to form one large communications network.

Where Is The Loon Project Heading To?

Project Loon began with a pilot test in June 2013, when thirty balloons were launched from New Zealand’s South Island and beamed Internet to a small group of pilot testers. The pilot test has since expanded to include a greater number of people over a wider area. Looking ahead, Project Loon will continue to expand the pilot, with the goal of establishing a ring of uninterrupted connectivity at latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, so that pilot testers in these latitudes can receive continuous service via balloon-powered Internet.
